Tottenham condemn pitch invaders in Europa League clash

Tottenham have apologised to supporters after three separate pitch invasions resulted in match officials suspending the club's Europa League clash with Partizan.

The first interloper entered the field of play in the 22nd minute and, after his interjection, more followed shortly afterwards, with three separate incidents culminating in a break in play during the 41st minute.

The pitch invasions appear to be an attempt at guerilla marketing, with all the 'fans' wearing branded clothing for a company which has an official partnership with Spurs.

"Three pitch invaders at tonight's match have been arrested and are assisting police with their enquiries," read a tweet on Tottenham's official Twitter page.

"We shall provide an update as soon as we have established the full facts.

"We apologise to fans for the disruptions caused by this totally unacceptable behaviour."

The north London club had earlier moved to delete a Twitter post which publicised officially branded items from the company in question.

The majority of the interlopers attempted to take selfies with the Spurs players, some of whom - Mousa Dembele and Roberto Soldado in particular - tried to aid the White Hart Lane stewards in apprehending them.

The north London club are likely to face action from Uefa over their failure to control the crowd, and could face either a fine or partial stadium closure.

Players returned to the pitch just under 10 minutes after the interruption, resuming the game which stood at 0-0.

Spurs went on to win the match 1-0 courtesy of Benjamin Stambouli's second-half strike, his first for the club, and are assured of their place in the knockout rounds - though travel to Besiktas in the final match to decide who tops Group C.

Tottenham could also face criticism for allowing a small minority of Albanian fans into the stadium on Thursday night, who attempted to antagonise the travelling Serbian support by hanging an Albania flag at one end of the stadium – through it was promptly removed by stewards.
