Ukraine appoints Fomenko to coaching post

Ukraine has named Mikhail Fomenko as its new head coach.

The position has been vacant since September, when outgoing boss Oleg Blokhin - who had been in charge during Euro 2012 - took the Dynamo Kiev job.

Ex-England and Manchester City boss Sven-Goran Eriksson had been strongly linked with the position. Current QPR manager Harry Redknapp had also reportedly had interest in the international gig, and the Ukraine federation had initially approached recently retired star striker Andriy Shevchenko for the post, but in the end Fomenko proved to be the successful candidate.

"I want to thank the board and president of the FFU for their trust," Fomenko told the official website of the FFU (Ukraine’s national football federation). "I understand the responsibility entrusted in me and challenges that face the national team of Ukraine. Our primary objective is to get to the finals of the World Cup in Brazil."
